If you're using Chrome it's possible to skip this step by using the extension versions of 4chan X and NameSync, but this is not recommended.
Userscripts are little apps that can be run in your web browser. They allow you to customise your experience of the sites you visit in various useful ways.
These extensions allow you to install userscripts. As 4chan X and NameSync are both userscripts, you will need one of these.
Chrome: Tampermonkey (alternative: Violentmonkey)
Firefox: Tampermonkey (alternatives: Greasemonkey, Violentmonkey)
4chan X is a userscript written by users of 4chan to add various features to the site.
This is required to use NameSync.
Chrome: Install (or use the Extension)
Firefox: Install
4chan X has a lot of settings. I would highly recommend reading through all of them and deciding for yourself what you do and do not want.
If you don't have the time or patience for that, you can check out the recommended settings below or just move on to the next step.
The 4chan X version as of writing this is 1.14.14.4
If you have a newer version of 4chan X, some of these settings might have been removed or had their names changed.
Note that some of these settings may already be enabled by default.

NameSync allows for the name, email, and subject fields to be used on boards where these are disabled.
Boards affected: /b/, /soc/, /s4s/, /trash/
Make sure you fill in the fields in the NS settings window, and not in the Quick Reply fields.
Chrome: Install (or use the Extension)
Firefox: Install
As of writing this, you have to add the below lines to "My Filters" in the uBlock Origin configuration for 4chan X and NameSync to function properly.
If you are using a different ad blocking extension, consider upgrading to uBlock Origin (Chrome / Firefox).
This can be ignored if you aren't using any ad blocking extensions.

As of writing this, OneeChan was abandoned and removed from GitHub. The install links below are for a new version maintained by Kevin Parnell.
OneeChan is a userscript that functions on top of 4chan X and allows you to customise the site with various functions, themes and mascots.
Originally developed by seaweedchan, this fork adds compatibility with various 4chan X versions and more custom options.
Chrome: Install
Firefox: Install
Tripfag-Finder is a userscript that allows you to view which threads NameSync users are posting in.
It also allows you to mark threads by categories so that other Tripfag-Finder users can find them.
Chrome: Install (or use the Extension)
Firefox: Install
Tripfag-Finder will require an exception in the uBlock Origin "My Filters" as well.

Tripcodes can help verify a user's identity to others, and are a type of pseudo-registration. To use a normal tripcode, place a hash mark ("#") followed by a word or short phrase after what you've entered into the [Name] field (ex. "User#password"). Upon submission, the server will generate the hash unique to that particular word or phrase. The previous example would display "User !ozOtJW9BFA" after being posted.
The following applications will let you generate custom vanity tripcodes by using the processing power of your computer.
"Meriken's Tripcode Engine" is a cross-platform application designed to generate custom/vanity tripcodes at maximum speed. It is arguably the fastest and most powerful program of its kind. It makes effective use of available computing power of CPUs and GPUs, and the user can specify flexible regex patterns for desired tripcodes.

If however the instructions are unclear, simply enter your desired phrase under the "#noregex" line in the patterns.txt file.
Running
If you have a 64-bit computer, run the MerikensTripcodeEngine64 executable.
If you have a 32-bit computer or are unsure, run the MerikensTripcodeEngine executable.
